Details

This Princes Hill alteration and addition reworks an existing heritage dwelling with a high-performance rear extension targeting Passivhaus Classic certification.

Designed by Jane Cameron Architects, the project pairs careful heritage retention with the precision required for airtight, low-energy construction. The new extension uses triple-glazed timber-aluminium windows, high levels of insulation and heat recovery ventilation to create a stable, comfortable indoor environment with low heating and cooling demand.

Design-stage Passivhaus assessment confirms the new extension can meet the targeted Passive House Classic standard, subject to construction being delivered in accordance with the reviewed documentation and PHPP model. Summer performance is a major focus, with shading, glazing selection and night-purge ventilation used to manage the project’s generous east-facing openings.

Materially, the project combines brick, brick slips, pleated aluminium cladding, timber soffits and reinstated roof details to create a contemporary addition that remains grounded in the character of the existing home.
